The Final Campaigns: Bougainville 1944-1945 by Karl James

A thesis written by Karl James to be awarded doctor of philosophy, it explores the conflict that occurred in Bougainville 1944-45 in relation to the personalities of the commanders and the feelings of the men serving under them.  By analysing, James looks at how decisions were formed by a commander’s experiences and character, as well as exploration of the ANZAC mythos.  Academic journals, war diaries, statistics and illustrations support the claims.  This thesis has been written for an academic audience, yet most of the information is still accessible for the common reader.  This thesis has many references to Headquarters 3rd Division, and can be used as an insight into the decision making that occurred when the unit was at Bougainville.  It is a different approach to looking at the campaign as it is from a philosophical perspective.
